Midweek Moments: Timeline

This week, I again listened to a talk about the character called Mr. Roger's.  This particular message asked, “What does it mean to love your neighbor?”

The promoted answer was, “Be interruptable." In other words, be available and listen to the nudges you hear in your head.

  • Standing in a grocery checkout line, the person ahead of you is a few dollars short. As he tries to decide what isn’t needed, do you help?
  • Walking down the street and you notice someone is sitting on the curb crying.  Do you ask what’s wrong?
  • You answer the knock at the door.  It’s a neighbor. You don’t know his name but you’ve seen him around.  He needs to get to work and his ride didn’t show.  He asks to use your phone.  He asks if you can give him a ride to the bus stop.  He asks if you have a few dollars for bus-fare.  How do you respond?
  • Walking down the street, you see a homeless girl looking down at her shoes.  Maybe she’s ashamed.  Maybe she’s just tired of being invisible.  Do you make eye contact, smile and say hello?  Can you give the gift of simple human recognition?

I flashbacked to an article I wrote.  As it turns out, it was published nearly 2 years ago.  This morning, I read it again.  It was worth the journey back in time as I was reminded of a single word that can be just one definition of what it means to be a good neighbor.
