Dissonance

Musical dissonance.

Annoying.  Grating.  The tension is intolerable.

We long for its termination.

Thankfully, the release is usually not far behind and it feels (yes, feels rather than sounds) great!

The reverse is also true.  We have periods where harmony exists throughout our days.  Relationships, finances and health are all in tune. We're in a good place.  C-Major is our life!

Knowing this probably won't last, idiomatic expressions exist to describe our anticipated dissonance.

  • Waiting for the other shoe to drop
  • Walking on eggshells
  • Walk the green mile
  • Walk the plank
  • Watch your six
  • Where there's smoke there's fire

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7

Sometimes, everything belongs to Murphy (you know, the guy with the law) and nothing goes right. Recently, a few people have commented about their experience with times like this.  Each had consciously relinquished the situation to God.  Literally.  They just gave it all to Him.

Their anxiety was replaced with a feeling of inner peace.  This peace, like no other, was complete and all-encompassing.  Dissonance vanished and in its place, contentment followed.  Believe it or not, I know exactly what that peace is like.  It's been while, but I remember.

So here's the thing. We all like to control our lives - or at least delude ourselves with that belief.  I'm aware of this self-deception.

I am also acutely aware of the potential for this peace.  I am reasonably intelligent and have the ability to make choices.

So then, why does holding tightly to control usually takes precedence over what I know is a better choice?  Why do I choose dissonance?

Hmm.

*  Thankful prayer and petition is offered. Thankful prayer and petition is welcomed.
